Denu (V/R), July 10, GNA — Residents in Denu in the Ketu South Municipality, on Friday turned out in large numbers to tidy their communities on the first of a two-day National Sanitation Day clean-up exercise announced by President John Dramani Mahama.
The Ghana News Agency (GNA) observed that Assembly Members across various electoral areas mobilised residents to clean streets, gutters and other public spaces.
At Denu-Tokor, the municipal capital, staff of the Ketu South Municipal Assembly, including personnel from the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) and National Service persons, actively participated in the exercise.
Security agencies also joined the initiative, with Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Alfred Kudah leading a team of police personnel to desilt gutters and clear accumulated waste.
ACP Kudah told the GNA that the directive was timely, especially following recent heavy rains that caused flooding in parts of the municipality.
He said the Police Command had already instructed all units to maintain clean surroundings, adding that the national exercise reinforced the need for proper sanitation to prevent possible disease outbreaks.
“The recent floods have shown the importance of keeping our environment clean. This exercise will help reduce the risk of post-flood health challenges,” he said.
The exercise saw the participation of apprentices, who were released by their craft masters to take part in the activity.
The GNA observed that many shops remained closed as traders joined the clean-up effort.
Some residents who spoke to the GNA commended the initiative and expressed support for the decision to observe this Friday and Saturday as National Sanitation Day.
They said the exercise would help improve environmental cleanliness and promote public health if sustained.
