Sefwi-Wiawso (WN), July 10, GNA – Residents of Sefwi-Wiawso, the Western North Regional capital, turned out in their numbers on Friday to participate in Day One of the National Sanitation Day exercise announced by President John Dramani Mahama.

The exercise, which commenced at 0800 hours, saw staff of the Wiawso Municipal Assembly as well as various departments of the Regional Coordinating Council taking part.

Addressing the media after the exercise, Mr. Francis Kwasi Osorede, the Wiawso Municipal Environmental Health Officer, expressed satisfaction with the turnout.

He commended residents, staff of the Wiawso Municipal Assembly, the Regional Coordinating Council and other state institutions for turning up in their numbers.

He announced plans to constitute a taskforce to arrest and prosecute residents who disposed of refuse indiscriminately, to keep the environment clean.

The Environmental Health Officer also called for collaboration from residents to ensure proper sanitation practices.

He explained that the exercise covered areas from Frimps Filling Station through Melcom to John Bitah Junction and would continue to other areas on Saturday.

Some participants who spoke to the Ghana News Agency ((GNA) lauded the exercise and suggested it be carried out at least once every week.

They said regular clean-ups would ensure that all gutters were desilted to allow free flow of water and prevent flooding.

Others called for stricter punishment for environmental offenders to serve as a deterrent to others.
