About Ghana News Agency

The Ghana News Agency (GNA) was established on March 5, 1957, under the Legislative Instrument (LI) 680 (1971), as part of the government’s comprehensive communication policy that sought to harness the information arm of the State to build a viable, united and cohesive newly independent nation-state.

The Agency’s news operations aim at mobilizing the population for nation building, economic and social development, national unity and integration. In the exercise of its mandate, the Agency has a bedrock of media pluralism serving as the primary provider of news and information to many subscribers, mainly media establishments over the years.

Core Mandate

The Ghana News Agency’s core mandate is to engage in the collection, processing, and dissemination of authentic and unbiased news about Ghana and beyond. The Agency essentially acts as a central news collection agent of the state, which gathers news from the regions and districts. It is instrumental in carrying government messages, policies, plans and programmes to the people especially those in the remotest areas of the country. To execute its mandate, the Agency set out to achieve the following objectives:

  1. To expand the scope of operations to include audio/video news content.
  2. To improve the financial and operational efficiency of the Agency.
  3. To improve the human resource capacity of the Agency
