Obuasi (Ash), Aug. 24, GNA – AngloGold Ashanti (AGA) Obuasi Mine, in partnership with key health institutions and local authorities, has intensified efforts to promote cardiovascular health and wellness among residents in its host communities.

The initiative formed part of the Mine’s quarterly community health outreach programme, dubbed the “Mini Clinic,” held at Akaporiso in the Obuasi East Municipality.

The outreach was organised in collaboration with Quantum LC, National Cardiothoracic Centre, AGA Health Foundation, Ghana Health Service, and Obuasi and Obuasi East Municipal Assemblies.

It sought to raise public awareness of cardiovascular diseases and promote preventive healthcare practices through free health screenings, medical consultations, and health education for residents.

Cardiovascular diseases, including hypertension, stroke, hypertensive heart disease, heart failure and coronary heart disease, remain a major public health concern, contributing significantly to morbidity and mortality in Ghana.

Mr Yaw Britwum Opoku, the Acting Director of Sustainability Management at AngloGold Ashanti, said the Mine remained committed to improving health outcomes in its host communities through accessible, sustainable and preventive healthcare initiatives.

He said the Mini Clinic programme was part of the Mine’s broader efforts to support the health and well-being of residents and encourage communities to adopt preventive healthcare practices.

Dr Kow Entsua-Mensah, the Director of the National Cardiothoracic Centre at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital, speaking to the media on the sidelines of the outreach, expressed concern about the growing burden of cardiovascular diseases in the country.

He stressed the importance of public education, prevention, and early diagnosis in reducing the health risks associated with cardiovascular diseases and improving treatment outcomes.

Dr Entsua-Mensah described hypertension as a “silent killer,” explaining that it could develop without noticeable symptoms but, when left untreated, increase the risk of heart attacks, stroke and kidney disease.

He, therefore, urged the public to adopt healthy lifestyles, including eating balanced diets, engaging in regular physical activity, undertaking routine health checks, and avoiding tobacco use.

Nana Bosompem Kitikyi Apenteng II, Overlord of Akaporiso, commended AngloGold Ashanti for prioritising the healthcare needs of its host communities through the Mini Clinic programme.

He described the initiative as a significant contribution towards improving access to quality healthcare and promoting the well-being of residents.
