Labadi Beach action not part of flood mitigation exercise – Stan Dogbe

By Iddi Yire, GNA

Accra, Oct. 2, GNA – Friday’s demolition of structures along a section of the Labadi Beach is not part of the Government’s flood mitigation exercise, Mr Stan Xoese Dogbe, Deputy Chief of Staff in charge of Operations at the Presidency, has stated.

He said the action was separate from the work of the Government Task Force at the Kpeshie Lagoon, East Legon Boundary Road, Oyarifa and behind Mayfair Estates.

Those interventions, he explained, were aimed at supporting the Ministry of Works, Housing and Water Resources to mitigate the impact of future floods.

In a statement, Mr Dogbe said Friday’s action was carried out under the supervision of the National Security at the request of the Labadi Beach Hotel.

He said the structures, including the Polo Beach Club and other permanent structures on the beach in front of the hotel, were reportedly affecting the safety, tranquillity and reputation of the hotel.

The structures were also diminishing the visitor experience and undermining the orderly management of an important tourism destination.

Mr Dogbe said although the hotel would be able to explain in greater detail the reasons for seeking to reclaim its beach frontage, the sanitation and security implications of unauthorised and unregulated commercial activities at the site remained a concern.

He said he had seen drone footage and short videos of the area and questioned whether the Labadi Beach Hotel was not justified in reclaiming its beach frontage.

He, however, clarified that his comments did not refer to the La Pleasure Beach.
