By Caleb Kuleke, GNA

Ho, Aug.19, GNA – Mr James Gunu, the Volta Regional Minister, says the Volta Economic Corridor Project, a massive sub-programme under the 24-Hour Economy framework is designed to maximise the region’s natural resources.

He explained that the project was strategically engineered to unlock the lake’s full potential including modernising inland water transport to boost regional connectivity and stimulate economic trade

The Minister stated that the initiative would ensure large-scale utilisation of the Volta Lake for irrigation, transforming the surrounding lands into high-yield agricultural hubs.

He highlighted the tourism sector as another key area targeted by the initiative, focusing on establishing premier lakeside hospitality hubs and eco-tourism destinations capable of attracting global investments.

Mr Gunu said these during a meeting with the Namibia High Commissioner, Mrs Ndiyakupi Nghituwamata, when she paid a courtesy call on him at his office in Ho.

The Minister also noted that the initiative would drive aquaculture development, by scaling-up commercial fish farming operations to strengthen national food security.

Mr Gunu said comprehensive a modernisation of the Volta Lake would stimulate round-the-clock economic activities, which was expected to generate thousands of sustainable, direct, and indirect jobs.

The Minister stated that the project would offer a critical economic lifeline for the local population, focusing particularly on creating opportunities for the youth.

Mr Gunu noted that entrepreneurship served as the primary engine driving the Government’s 24-Hour Economy initiative, as sustainable economic growth relied heavily on private sector innovation and business enterprise.

Mr Felix Adom Boateng, the Volta Regional Economic Planning Officer (REPO), affirmed that the Regional Coordinating Council would spare no effort in protecting the region from illegal mining.

He stated that the Volta Region remained the only region in Ghana entirely unaffected by the devastating impacts of illegal mining, emphasising that strict measures would continue to sustain this status.

The Planning Officer explained that the regional capital’s identity as an “Oxygen City” thrived on its lush, and green environment.

Combined with a booming hospitality sector and top-tier hotels, Mr Boateng said that Ho was rapidly cementing its reputation as the premier conference hub of the country.
