Ashaiman, Sept. 15, GNA – Mr Freeman Tsekpo, the Ashaiman Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), has cautioned beneficiaries of the District Assembly Disability Common Fund against selling equipment and other items provided to support their livelihoods.
Mr Tsekpo said the items were provided to help beneficiaries establish or strengthen their businesses and improve their livelihoods and would be subject to routine monitoring by the assembly.
He gave the caution when the Ashaiman Municipal Assembly (ASHMA) disbursed about GH¢400,000 from the Disability Common Fund to support registered persons with disabilities in the municipality.
He said 59 beneficiaries were shortlisted after the Municipal Disability Committee screened applications and inspected beneficiaries’ homes and businesses to validate their requests.
According to him, 43 beneficiaries received capital to start businesses; 15 received operational items, including deep freezers, industrial sewing machines, and laptops, while one beneficiary received direct medical support.
Mr Tsekpo said all equipment distributed had been embossed with unique assembly tracking numbers to facilitate monitoring.
He warned that selling government-issued equipment was a criminal offence and urged beneficiaries to use the items for their intended purposes.
The MCE also advised prospective applicants to channel their requests through their respective Electoral Area Assembly Members, whose endorsement was required before applications could proceed to the Social Welfare evaluation stage.
On tax obligations, the municipal authorities clarified that standard national tax policies applied to equipment purchases, while beneficiaries seeking formal tax exemptions should channel their requests through the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA).
The programme was attended by Mr Ernest Norgbey, Member of Parliament for Ashaiman, and Mr Joshua Addy, National Coordinator of the National Council on Persons with Disabilities (NCPD).
