Twedie (Ash), Aug. 21, GNA – The Atwima Kwanwoma District Assembly has organised a skills development programme for Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) to promote economic empowerment and sustainable livelihoods.
The programme, organised by the Department of Social Welfare and Community Development, trained PWDs and caregivers from various communities in pastry production, fresh yoghurt production and snail rearing.
The beneficiaries included persons with physical, visual and hearing impairments.
Mrs. Grace Agyemang Asamoah, the District Chief Executive (DCE), speaking at the programme, urged the beneficiaries to put the skills acquired into practice and develop them into viable income-generating ventures.
She said: “Do not go back home and sleep on the training you have received.
“Go and work hard to improve your life”
Mrs. Asamoah encouraged the beneficiaries to also share their knowledge with others in their communities to create additional livelihood opportunities and contribute to poverty reduction.
She reaffirmed the government’s commitment to empowering PWDs through skills training and other interventions, stressing that disability should not be a barrier to economic participation.
Mrs. Hannah Yeboah, the District Social Welfare Officer, said the inclusion of persons with different forms of disabilities was intended to ensure that the programme benefited a broad spectrum of PWDs in the district.
She said the Department would continue to support initiatives aimed at equipping PWDs with practical skills to enhance their economic independence.
Mr. Yaw Nsafoa, the Chairman of the Ghana Society for Persons with Disability, Atwima Kwanwoma Chapter, urged the beneficiaries to make good use of the training and turn the skills acquired into income-generating businesses.
He said the ventures introduced to them required relatively modest start-up capital and encouraged them to work hard to make them successful.
Mr. Nsafoa further advised the beneficiaries to seek guidance from the Department of Social Welfare and Community Development whenever they needed assistance in applying the skills acquired.
