Bucharest, July 21 (dpa/GNA) – Moldova’s parliament has elected finance expert, Vasile Tofan, as the country’s new prime minister, the news agency Moldpress reported on Tuesday.
The 44-year-old was voted in by members of parliament from President Maia Sandu’s pro-Western ruling Party of Action and Solidarity.
Tofan succeeds Alexandru Munteanu, who unexpectedly announced his resignation in early July, after just eight months in office. According to Moldovan media reports, the resignation came against the backdrop of several scandals linked not only to the government, but also to the president’s inner circle. The state which lies between Ukraine and EU member Romania, has been an EU accession candidate since 2022.
Transnistria, a predominantly Russian-speaking region along the Dniester river, has been separated from the rest of the country for more than 30 years, and is regarded as a Moscow outpost in the region.
