Rome, July 21 (dpa/GNA) – A German woman believed to be around 60 years of age, died on Tuesday after falling approximately 200 metres while hiking in South Tyrol, northern Italy.
She was part of a group of about 10, setting out on a multi-day trek along the Tyrol High Trail in the Passeier Valley, according to the Italian mountain rescue service. About 30 minutes after the hike began on Tuesday morning, she fell from the trail for reasons that remain unclear.
Mountain rescue teams, assisted by a helicopter, responded to the scene, but the woman had died instantly, rescue workers said.
The group had spent the previous night in a hut at an altitude of about 1,600 metres. Authorities did not release further details about her identity beyond confirming that she was a German national. It was the second fatal hiking accident in the region within a matter of hours.
The previous day, an 80-year-old man also died after a fall. South Tyrol, Italy’s northernmost region, where German is widely spoken, is one of the most popular tourist destinations in the Alps.
