Authorities demolish unsafe building at Osu

Accra, June 9, GNA – In a decisive move to avert further loss of lives, the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) on Monday supervised the demolition of a four-storey structure at Osu, which had been declared unsafe by authorities.

The GNFS provided safety cover for the controlled demolition of the dilapidated building, located on Abebrese Street in the Korle Klottey Constituency.

Two fire tenders were deployed to the site throughout the operation to ensure maximum safety during the exercise.

The demolition, which involved the use of heavy earth-moving equipment, was successfully completed without any injuries or incidents.

Debris removal and site-clearing activities were ongoing at the time of reporting.

Speaking to the Ghana News Agency (GNA), Divisional Officer II Desmond Ackah, Head of Public Relations at the GNFS, explained that the decision to demolish the structure was necessary due to the imminent danger it posed to residents and nearby properties.

“The building had become a clear threat to lives and property. We could not allow it to remain standing because any further collapse could have resulted in additional deaths and injuries,” he said.

The emergency action follows a devastating building collapse at Avenor in the North Industrial Area on Sunday, in which three people tragically lost their lives.

One other person, who is in critical condition, is receiving treatment at the hospital.

Authorities say investigations into the cause of the collapse are ongoing, while efforts continue to ensure the safety of residents and prevent similar incidents in the future.
