Kportitsekorpe-Ada, May 20, GNA – A heavy rainstorm that hit Kportitsekorpe, a community in the Ada West District of the Greater Accra Region, has destroyed classroom blocks at the community’s basic school, leaving hundreds of pupils without places for teaching and learning.
The storm, which lasted for nearly two hours from about 18:00, ripped up roofing sheets and damaged classroom structures from kindergarten one and two through Primary one to six, as well as junior high school one and two.
Mr Ezekiel Kportie, Chairman of the Parent-Teacher Association (PTA) of the school, told the Ghana News Agency (GNA) that more than 500 pupils had been affected by the incident.
He explained that teaching and learning materials, including books and records, were soaked by the rain, making academic work impossible.
According to him, classes have been suspended temporarily until urgent repairs are carried out.
“We are appealing to the district assembly, NGOs, philanthropists, and benevolent individuals to come to our aid because the children currently have no place to study,” he said.

Mr Rockson Ahuakese, Assembly Member for the area, confirmed the incident and said the matter had been reported to the Ada West District Assembly for assessment and possible intervention.
He added that the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO) had also been informed about supporting relief efforts.
Mr Ahuakese noted that apart from the destruction of classrooms, furniture, and books, other school properties were damaged, a situation he described as a major setback to education in the community.
Residents described the incident as the worst rainstorm disaster to hit the community in the past five years.
Some community members appealed to the government and development partners to support the construction of a new and more resilient school block to prevent future occurrences.
