Accra, March. 05, GNA—The Reverend Helen Adjoa Ntoso, a National Democratic Congress (NDC) Member of Parliament (MP) for Krachi West, has called for accelerated progress towards gender equity and women’s empowerment in Ghana.
Speaking on the Floor of Parliament ahead of this year’s International Women’s Day (IWD), she said, “Mr. Speaker, the theme for this year’s celebration, “Rights. Justice. Action. For ALL Women and Girls” challenges us to accelerate progress towards gender equity and the empowerment of women and girls.”
The IWD is a global celebration held on March 8 every year to celebrate women’s achievements and contributions, reflect on progress made towards gender equality, raise awareness about remaining challenges, and call for action to accelerate women’s empowerment.
The United Nations (UN) describes it as a moment to “celebrate the social, economic, cultural, and political achievements of women” and “accelerate gender parity.”
This year’s theme emphasises the need to dismantle structural barriers to equal justice, including discriminatory laws, weak legal protections, and harmful practices that erode women’s rights.
Rev. Ntoso highlighted Ghana’s progress in promoting gender equity, including the enactment of key legislation such as the Domestic Violence Act and the Affirmative Action (Gender Equity) Act 2024.
However, she noted that challenges persisted and called on Parliament to champion bold actions, including legislative reforms, prioritising funding for programmes that tackle gender-based violence, and ensuring accountability.
“Mr. Speaker, we must dismantle barriers and drive collective action. Together we can forge a Ghana where every woman and girl enjoys her rights, has access to justice, and contributes fully to our nation’s progress,” she said.
The MP also commended Ghanaian women in public office, including female MPs, for their resilience and leadership.
She celebrated Dr. Mrs. Clara Kowlaga Beeri Kasser-Tee, the first Ghanaian woman to graduate with a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Law.
“Her achievement isn’t just a personal win; it marks significant progress in our fight for rights, justice, and action,” Rev. Ntoso said.
