Accra, Aug. 10, GNA – The Black Queens of Ghana have exited the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) following a 2-1 defeat to Malawi in the quarterfinals.
The Black Queens made a bright start to the encounter, taking the lead in the seventh minute through Chantelle Boye-Hlorkah who volleyed from close range.
Malawi, however, responded positively and restored parity in the 27th minute when star striker Temwa Chawinga found the back of the net, ensuring the two sides went into the break level.
Ghana pressed for a second goal after the restart and appeared to have regained the lead when Doris Boaduwaa scored, but the effort was ruled out following a VAR review.
Malawi capitalised on the reprieve and struck the decisive goal in the 79th minute through Rose Smith Kadzere.
Despite sustained pressure from the Black Queens in the closing stages, Malawi held on to secure a historic victory and progress to the semis.
The defeat ends Ghana’s WAFCON title aspirations and means the Black Queens miss automatic qualification for the FIFA Women’s World Cup.
However, Ghana still has an opportunity to reach the global tournament through the playoff route.
The Black Queens would face Côte d’Ivoire in the first playoff eliminator on Thursday as they quest for a place at the World Cup.
