UGMC disputes Blackson’s claims over late mother’s treatment

Accra, Aug. 10, GNA – The University of Ghana Medical Centre (UGMC) has disputed claims by comedian and actor Michael Blackson concerning the medical care provided to his late mother.

The Centre said the claims contained inaccuracies but declined to disclose details of the patient’s diagnosis, treatment or medical records, citing confidentiality obligations.

A statement issued by UGMC Management said it had reviewed Mr Blackson’s comments, shared on social media on August 4, concerning the care provided to his mother, who died at the facility on July 16, 2026.

“We wish to state unequivocally that the facts presented by Mr. Blackson on social media contains numerous inaccuracies and do not accurately reflect the events that transpired in the provision of medical care to his 83-year-old mother,” the statement said.

UGMC expressed condolences to Mr Blackson and his family and said it valued feedback from patients and their families, including critical comments, as part of efforts to improve healthcare delivery.

It said the concerns raised had been reviewed thoroughly, fairly and objectively in accordance with its established clinical and administrative procedures.

The Centre said the patient was referred from a peripheral hospital and received care at UGMC from May 27 to July 16, 2026.

It said it would not disclose details of the patient’s diagnosis, treatment, medical records or care because of its ethical and legal obligation to protect patient confidentiality, which continued after death.

The Centre said the decision also sought to preserve the dignity of the deceased and respect the privacy of the bereaved family.

It said all clinical decisions were made by qualified healthcare professionals in accordance with established standards of care, sound medical judgment and the best interests of patients.

UGMC said that such decisions were taken in consultation with, and with the consent of, designated and authorised family representatives where necessary.

On billing and financial matters, the Centre said its processes were transparent, governed by institutional policies and operated independently of clinical decision-making.

Regarding the reported assault of Mr Blackson’s sister by a member of staff, UGMC said the matter had been referred to the appropriate law enforcement authorities and it would not comment further while investigations were ongoing.

The Centre said it remained ready to engage directly and privately with the family through the appropriate channels and that any specific allegation of staff misconduct would be fully investigated and referred to the relevant authorities where necessary.

UGMC appealed for public patience and understanding as it addressed the matter with fairness, professionalism and respect for all parties.

It encouraged clients with concerns about services received at the hospital to contact its Client Services Unit through [email protected] or 053 110 3136 for review and resolution.

UGMC is a limited liability company jointly owned by the Ministry of Health and the University of Ghana and provides specialist medical services while serving as an academic medical centre for training and research.
