Hlefi (V/R), March 07, GNA – Basic Schools in the Ho West District have competed fiercely at the Basic School Annual Quiz Competition (BaSAQ-C) finals in Hlefi, to promote academic excellence and to prepare for the Basic Education Certificate Examination.
The competition, initiated by Mr Emmanuel Kwasi Bedzrah, the Member of Parliament of Ho West, brought together four outstanding schools for the final stage of the 2026 Basic Schools Academic Quiz Competition (BASAQ-C).
Mr Bedzrah, addressing contestants, teachers and stakeholders, said the initiative, launched 11 years ago in collaboration with the Ho West District Education Directorate, sought to motivate pupils to study harder ahead of the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE).
“We realised years ago that academic performance in the district was not encouraging; so, we introduced this competition to motivate students through healthy academic rivalry,” he said.
The MP noted that the contest, which involved public and private Junior High Schools across the district, had contributed significantly to improving results and strengthening the academic foundation of pupils.
According to him, the long-term vision was to expand the initiative across other constituencies in the Volta Region to promote competition and academic excellence among schools.

Mr Edem Agbana, the guest speaker, commended the Ho West MP for initiating the programme and indicated plans to replicate a similar quiz competition in his constituency.
Madam Seline Ewodey Gobe, the District Director of Education for Ho West, described the event as a celebration of knowledge, discipline and teamwork, urging contestants to uphold integrity and sportsmanship.
“This platform allows our learners to discover and showcase their talents while strengthening the culture of academic excellence in the district,” she stated.
The steering committee explained that 74 public and private junior high schools participated in the 2026 edition, progressing through several stages until four schools reached the grand finale.
At the end of the contest, the Tsito Methodist JHS emerged winners with 56 points, followed by Dzolokpuita JHS with 53.5 points, while Hlefi JHS and defending champions Holuta‑Aflakpui Basic School placed third and fourth respectively.
