Dambai (O/R), March 07, GNA – The Krachi East Municipal Assembly in collaboration with the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE), has shifted its Independence Day celebrations from the traditional marching parade to a quiz competition.Â
The competition aimed at promoting academic excellence and civic awareness among the youth.
The 69th Independence Day celebration, held on March 6, 2026, featured a quiz competition among six Senior High Schools in the municipality with high-profile persons, including personnel from the security agencies in attendance.
This year’s event marked a continuation of a trend started in 2025, when the municipality first replaced the traditional marching parade with a quiz competition to commemorate Ghana’s 68th Independence Day.
Mr Safo Nketia, the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), explained that the quiz competition was designed to test students’ knowledge and mental abilities, complementing the holistic development of the child.
He emphasised that both marching and quiz competitions were essential as they promote different aspects of a child’s development. “The marching parade showcases the child’s coordination and celebration skills, while the quiz competition assesses their mental abilities,” Mr Nketia added.
The MCE highlighted the benefits of the quiz competition, stating that it encouraged critical thinking, teamwork, and healthy competition among the students.
He also noted that the quiz competition provided an opportunity for students to demonstrate their knowledge of Ghana’s history, culture, and current affairs.
“With the quiz competition, the Assembly will not go to handicap and can still use part of the money to build classrooms, provide furniture, and educational materials,” he stressed.
He added that the Assembly was committed to promoting education and would continue to support initiatives that enhanced academic excellence.
The quiz competition was part of the municipality’s efforts to celebrate Ghana’s independence and promote national pride among the youth.
The winners were awarded prizes and certificates, with the top school receiving the coveted trophy. The event was hailed as a success, with participants and attendees alike praising the organizers for promoting a positive and engaging way to celebrate Ghana’s independence.
