Samenye ( W/R), January 16, GNA- Madam Dorcas Afo-Toffey, Member of Parliament ( MP) for Jomoro has cut the sod for the construction of an ultra-modern Driver Vehicle and Licensing Authority (DVLA) office at Samenye barrier in the Jomoro Municipality.
The project, expected to be completed within one year, would register all vehicles including Okada drivers in the Jomoro Municipality with a registration number plate which starts with “JM 1”.
Madam Afo-Toffey, who doubles as the Deputy Minister of Transport said prior to the completion of the project at the Samenye barrier, a temporary office of the DVLA would be in operation by the end of February at Tikobo No.1.
The MP said it formed part of a campaign pledge to reduce the burden of drivers who had travelled long distances to Takoradi for registration and vehicular – related issues.
Madam Afo-Toffey said DVLA had in the past one year employed about 40 contract staff from Jomoro under her efforts.
The Deputy Minister of Transport assured the people that the Samenye-New Town road had been awarded on contract to Kingspork Construction Limited and the contractor would soon be on site.
The MP said her office and the District Assembly had embarked upon development projects dotted in the Municipality and would continue to bring development to the area.
Madam Afo-Toffey commended Mr Ndede Siah, NPP Western Regional Chairman who graced the occasion commended the MP for the developmental projects they were initiating to change the fortunes of Jomoro.
Mr Julius Neequaye Kotey, Chief Executive Officer ( CEO) of the Driver Vehicle and Licensing Authority ( DVLA) said, the office, the first of its kind since government assumed office in 2025,was aimed at streaming driver licensing operations in the country and bring DVLA to the doorsteps of the people.
Mr Neequaye Kotey said 40 workers were expected to be employed and since DVLA would operate in three shifts under the 24-hour economy, a total of 120 workers would be employed in Jomoro.
He hinted that DVLA would build drivers’ Hospital in each District, and 0 boreholes would also be built in different communities in Jomoro.
Mr Benedict Boadi, Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for Jomoro said the office would bring sanity in the licensing regime and cut down transportation cost to and from Takoradi.
He said the Petroleum Hub Development Project was underway and would offer employment to youth in the area.
Mr Boadi said the Assembly had embarked upon numerous projects which would be completed on schedule.
The MCE said every community in the Municipality without light would be connected to the national electricity grid.
Mr Ndede Siah, Western Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), said Jomoro needed to unite for development devoid of party affiliation.
He pledged his support for the MP and MCE to deliver the goods in their forward march to change the fortunes of Jomoro.
Nana Arvo Nwiah,Chief of Tikobo No.2 who represented the Paramount Chief of the Western Nzema Traditional Area, Awulae Kwasi Armakyi III, identified the DVLA project as dear to the heart of people in Jomoro as it would be a catapult to the Petroleum Hub Development Project.
He pledged the support of the traditional council to the success of the project.
Nana Arvo Nwiah asked the government to give employment quota of higher managerial positions to the indigenous people.
