Christian Council welcomes national clean-up exercise

Accra, July 9, GNA – The Christian Council of Ghana has welcomed President John Dramani Mahama’s call for Ghanaians to participate in a nationwide environmental clean-up exercise scheduled for Friday, July 10, and Saturday, July 11, 2026.

A statement signed by Rev. Dr. Cyril G.K. Fayose, General Secretary of the Council, described the initiative as timely and important in renewing national attention to the urgent need for improved environmental sanitation and responsible stewardship of communities.

The Council said the declaration offered an opportunity to inspire a renewed moral commitment to environmental care and cleanliness, stressing that Ghana’s sanitation challenges required not only sound policies and institutional action but also sustained changes in attitudes and behaviour.

It noted that environmental cleanliness was both a civic duty and a sacred responsibility, citing biblical injunctions on humanity’s stewardship of creation.

The Council observed that Ghana continued to grapple with indiscriminate waste disposal, choked drains, recurrent flooding, sanitation-related diseases and pollution, calling for a collective response involving government, citizens, faith communities, traditional authorities, civil society organisations, educational institutions, businesses and development partners.

It therefore urged Christian denominations, churches, para-church organisations, ecumenical bodies and the general public to participate actively in the exercise and to embrace cleanliness as a continuous responsibility rather than an occasional undertaking.

The Council said the initiative would also help strengthen volunteerism, patriotism and active citizenship, adding that sustained community participation and positive behavioural change were essential to building cleaner and healthier communities.

As part of its own commitment to environmental stewardship, the Council recalled the recent launch of its Environmental Care and Cleanliness Programme on the theme, “A Clean Environment – Our Responsibility!” It pledged to intensify community education, church mobilisation, clean-up campaigns, youth volunteer activities and advocacy efforts across the country.

The Council further invited corporate bodies, development partners, faith-based organisations and other stakeholders to support the implementation of the programme from May 2026 to May 2028.

President Mahama announced the two-day national clean-up exercise earlier this week amid growing concerns over poor sanitation, choked drains and the perennial flooding that often accompanies the rainy season in many parts of the country. The initiative is intended to galvanise citizens and institutions to take practical steps towards improving environmental sanitation and public health nationwide.
