Adaklu Kodzobi (V/R), Jan 29, GNA – Residents of Adaklu Kodzobi in the Volta Region are raising concerns about dangerous driving and over-speeding by “Candoo” and other vehicle drivers plying the Bedrock Hostel and University of Health and Allied Sciences (UHAS) Road.
Mr Simon Meble, a provisions storekeeper at Adaklu Kodzobi told the Ghana News Agency (GNA) that the attitude of the drivers has become a “nuisance” to them especially those living by the roadside.
He noted that the drivers were only concerned about the profits they would make and have no regard for the safety of the residents, especially school children crossing the road to school.
Mr Meble said that the drivers should be called to order before anything untoward happens.
Students of UHAS resident at Bedrock Hostel located at Kodzobi Ando rely on these drivers to transport them to and from lectures.
Mr Samuel Archie Deh, a pensioner and a resident, said as if the reckless driving and over-speeding was not enough, the students were always packed in the “Candoos” posing danger to their lives.
He stated that the dusty nature of the road and the reckless overtaking could cause an accident as it made visibility difficult.
When the GNA visited the area to verify the concerns raised by the residents, it observed that some “Candoo” drivers were carrying eight and seven students at a time.
In most instances the drivers sat between two of the students at the front with about five or four at the back, some sitting on others.
The GNA could not snap a picture of a student, who was hanging dangerously on one of the candoos, when a bystander drew its attention to it.
A Security at UHAS, who chose to remain anonymous, told the GNA that the drivers were warned several times to desist from the habit, but they remained adamant.
When asked if they could not impose sanctions on the recalcitrant drivers, he stated, “if persuasion fails then force must apply.”
