AngloGold Ashanti commissions two health facilities in Obuasi

Obuasi, July 14, GNA – The AngloGold Ashanti Obuasi Mine has commissioned two modern health facilities in Obuasi, reinforcing its commitment to sustainable community development under the Mines 10-Year Socio-Economic Development Plan (SEDP). 

The Apitikooko Health Centre and Staff Quarters, valued at GH¢4,077,496.70, and the Dokyiwa/Binsere Health Centre, valued at GH¢2,712,264.20, are expected to significantly improve access to quality primary healthcare, particularly, maternal and child health services, outpatient care and emergency medical services for thousands of residents in the beneficiary communities. 

Mr. Samuel Boakye Pobee, the Managing Director of AngloGold Ashanti Obuasi Mine, addressing guests at the commissioning ceremony, described the facilities as strategic investments in healthier and more resilient communities, reflecting the company’s purpose of mining to empower people and advance societies. 

He noted that the staff quarters at Apitikooko would help attract and retain healthcare professionals, ensuring uninterrupted delivery of quality healthcare services. 

Mr. Pobee explained that the projects formed part of the Mine’s broader health infrastructure programme, which also included the rehabilitation of the Anyinam Health Centre, the ongoing construction of the Akaporiso Model Health Centre, and a quarterly Mini Clinic outreach programme.  

He said the initiatives were collectively strengthening healthcare systems and improving health outcomes across the Mine’s host communities. 

Dr. Frank Amoakohene, the Ashanti Regional Minister, in a speech read for him, commended the AngloGold Ashanti for complementing government’s efforts to expand healthcare infrastructure, describing the projects as a testament to the impact of strong public-private partnerships in advancing community development. 

He urged the beneficiary communities to safeguard the facilities to ensure they serve future generations. 

Dr. Fred Adomako-Boateng, the Ashanti Regional Director of Health Services, described the facilities as a major boost to primary healthcare delivery and reaffirmed the Ghana Health Service’s commitment to ensuring they were adequately staffed and efficiently managed. 

Okofo Kwabena Bonsu, the Dompoasehene, speaking on behalf of the beneficiary communities, expressed profound appreciation to the AngloGold Ashanti for the transformational investment, describing the facilities as a lasting legacy that would improve access to healthcare, enhance community wellbeing and support the long-term socioeconomic development of the area.
