Bail conditions excessive, inhumane – Oti NPP Communications Director

By Kingsley Mamore

Dambai (O/R), July 14, GNA – Mr Seidu Musah, Oti Regional Communications Director of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has described the bail conditions imposed on the party’s Director of Communications, Mr Dennis Miracles Aboagye, as excessive and politically motivated.

Mr Musah said if the current trend continued, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and its appointees could face similar circumstances in the event of a change in government.

He said under such a future administration, the NDC “would be required to produce the stick Moses used to part the Red Sea” as a bail bond, suggesting that bail conditions could become even more stringent than those currently imposed on opposition figures.

His comments follow the arrest of Mr Aboagye, who was granted bail in the sum of GH¢50 million with three sureties, two of whom must be justified.

Mr Musah said although the NPP respected the rule of law and the independence of the Judiciary, bail conditions should not be so onerous as to create the impression that they were intended to punish an accused person before trial.

He maintained that every accused person was presumed innocent until proven guilty by a competent court of law and should therefore be treated fairly within the justice system.

Mr Musah alleged that some recent actions against opposition members reflected what he described as the politicisation of state institutions, warning that such developments could undermine public confidence in Ghana’s democratic governance.

He called on the authorities to ensure that the administration of justice remained impartial and free from political influence, stressing that fairness before the law was essential to preserving the country’s democratic credentials.

Mr Musah also urged political actors across the divide to avoid actions and rhetoric that could heighten political tensions, saying Ghana’s democracy thrived when the rights of all citizens were protected regardless of political affiliation.

He reiterated the NPP’s commitment to democratic principles and the rule of law and expressed confidence that due process would prevail.

The remarks have generated reactions among party supporters and political observers, with differing views on whether the bail conditions imposed on Mr Aboagye were proportionate to the circumstances of the case.
