Ukrainian military rejects Russian claims on Pokrovsk and other towns

Kiev, Dec 4, (dpa/GNA) – Ukrainian Commander-in-Chief, Oleksandr Syrskyi, on Thursday rejected Russian claims of seizing the strategically significant eastern Ukrainian town of Pokrovsk.

“Ukrainian units continue to hold the northern part of Pokrovsk,” Syrskyi posted on Facebook.

He said the Russian advance and circumvention of Pokrovsk and neighbouring Myrnohrad had been halted.

Syrskyi added that the organization of resupply lines, evacuation of the wounded and measures to counter Russian artillery and drones had been discussed at a meeting.

The Ukrainian military also rejected Russian claims made on Monday, of taking Vovchansk on the Russian border in the Kharkiv region.

“All attempts by the enemy to hoist his flag in Vovchansk end the same way: they get killed,” Colonel Ivan Kolontai, deputy commanding officer of the 16th Corps of the Ukrainian Army, said, adding that the eastern, southern and western approaches continued to be under Ukrainian control.

The surrounding settlements were also held by Ukrainian units, he said.

Separately, the general staff in Kiev denied Russian successes to the north of Hulyaipole in Zaporizhzhya. It said a Russian reconnaissance party of five had been “destroyed.”

Ukraine has been warding off a full-scale Russian invasion since February 2022.
