Kpone, June 23, GNA — The National Road Safety Authority (NRSA) has commended the Kpone-Katamanso Municipal Assembly (KKMA) for proactively clearing the median along the N1 Highway from the Kpone Barrier to the Tema Roundabout to improve visibility and enhance road safety.
Mr Joshua Quist, the Greater Accra Regional Director of the NRSA, gave the commendation in an interview with the Ghana News Agency (GNA) during the second phase of the median clearance exercise at the Centre of the World Golf Course enclave.
Mr Quist commended Mr Samuel Tetteh Kwashie Morton, the Kpone-Katamanso MCE, and described the initiative as timely and exemplary, saying the MCE had demonstrated leadership worthy of emulation by other metropolitan, municipal and district chief executives (MMDCEs) across the country.
He said the accumulation of sand, overgrown weeds and other obstructions on medians along major roads often impaired the visibility of both motorists and pedestrians, contributing significantly to road crashes, especially at night.
“The Kpone-Katamanso MCE has set the pace for other MMDCEs to emulate. Clearing the median will not only improve visibility for motorists but also help reduce pedestrian fatalities and protect lives and property from avoidable road crashes,” he said.

The NADMO Regional Director expressed concern over the increasing number of pedestrian deaths recorded nationwide, stressing the need for collaborative efforts to reverse the trend.
He disclosed that Ghana recorded 590 pedestrian deaths in 2024, which increased marginally to 709 in 2025.
Mr Quist further revealed that between January and April 2026, the country had already recorded 11 pedestrian fatalities, describing the figures as alarming.
He called on local authorities, road agencies and all stakeholders to prioritise road safety interventions, including routine maintenance of road medians, installation of appropriate road signs and public education to safeguard road users.
Mr Samuel Tetteh Kwashie Morton, the Kpone-Katamanso MCE, expressed appreciation to the NRSA for its continuous support and technical guidance towards improving road safety within the municipality.
Mr Morton assured the NRSA that the assembly would continue to collaborate with all relevant stakeholders to ensure safer roads for motorists, pedestrians and other road users.
He said road safety remained a shared responsibility and appealed to residents to complement the assembly’s efforts by observing traffic regulations and using designated pedestrian crossings where available.
The MCE also called on contractors undertaking road projects within the municipality to expedite work and complete the projects within the stipulated timelines to minimise inconvenience to commuters and reduce accident risks.
According to him, good road infrastructure remained a critical driver of socio-economic development, facilitating the movement of people, goods and services while creating an enabling environment for businesses to thrive.
He reaffirmed the assembly’s commitment to implementing practical interventions that would improve public safety, beautify the municipality and contribute to the government’s broader road safety agenda.
