Tangier, Dec. 27, GNA – Mr. Hicham Kharoufi, Port Call Optimization Manager at Morocco’s Tanger Med Port, has revealed plans for a major expansion of its passenger terminal to accommodate a surge in visitors expected during the 2030 FIFA World Cup.
Morocco would co-host the 2030 World Cup with Spain and Portugal in a highly anticipated global football showpiece.
Mr. Kharoufi told African journalists during a tour of the facility that the port currently handles about 30,000 passengers per day.
“We hope to increase that number to 60,000 by the time the World Cup comes around in 2030,” he said.
The expansion, expected to be completed by 2028, would focus on boosting capacity for passengers and trucks.
“The reason for the extension is the volume of passengers we expect during the World Cup. Some supporters will come from Europe by sea, so we need to have more capacity,” Mr Kharoufi added.
Tanger Med Group, which operates one of the world’s largest industrial-port platforms, plays a key role in Morocco’s foreign trade and connectivity.
Beyond logistics, the group develops competitive industrial parks for global operators, reinforcing Morocco’s position as a strategic hub for commerce and investment.
