Namusi (E/R), Dec. 18, GNA – Mr Sampson Tettey, the Assembly Member for the Abrewanko Electoral Area in the Yilo Krobo Municipality of the Eastern Region, has appealed for potable drinking water for 10 communities in the area.
He expressed worry that the about 2,000 people spread across the 10 deprived communities lacked clean drinking water and relied on the “Adibodor” stream, sharing the stream with stray animals.
The communities comprise Labolabo, Namusi, Nyamebekyere, Arzah, Sodjonu, Adibodornya, Amagarnya and Ahieyom farming communities located along the Nkurakan-Somanya road in Municipality.
In an interview with the Ghana News Agency (GNA) during a visit to the area, Mr Tettey said the situation worsened after the construction of a bridge on the Nkurakan-Somanya highway road three years ago.
He explained that: “The stream was highly polluted because of the construction of the bridge which linked the ‘Yaabotwei’ another stream with the Adibordor stream.”
Mr Tettey said the deprived communities also lacked communal toilet facilities contributing to open defecation, and expressed the fear that if the situation was not addressed it could lead to outbreak of diseases.
He therefore appealed to the Municipal Assembly, Non-governmental Organisations, corporate bodies and philanthropic organisations and wealthy individuals to come to the aid of the communities.
In another interview, Nene Kingsley Teye Antwi, the Dadematse (sub-chief) in the area also expressed similar sentiments, and appealed for support, calling on the Ghana Water Company to extend its services to the area.
