Black Queens dimmed in painful WAFCON start

Accra, July 8, GNA – The Black Queens of Ghana began their Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) campaign on a disappointing note after a 2-0 defeat to Group C counterparts South Africa.

The West African giants struggled to find their rhythm in a frustrating first half performance, which the defending champions fully capitalized on.

Ghana looked to spark early momentum through Doris Boaduwaa and Evelyn Badu, but the South African defense stood firm to challenge every move.

Bayana Bayana, composed and confident, launched into the game with back-to-back attacks that tested a shaky Ghanaian defense.

A reckless challenge in the 18-yard box by former Real Betis midfielder Grace Asantewaa saw the ladies in yellow, South Africa awarded a penalty, which Linda Motlhalo calmly slotted in the 27th minute.

With relentless pressure, the defending champions proved their worth and gave the Queens no room to build play and maintained firm control of possession.

Jermaine Seoposenwe capped off South Africa’s sustained pressure with a fine finish in the 33rd minute to double the lead.

Ghana tried to regroup and respond, pushing more players upfront but it still failed to disrupt the opponent’s rhythm.

After recess, the losing side returned with purpose and intensity yet could not scare the winning team.

Despite the late drama, Ghana could not break through, closing out the game with a 2-0 defeat against the Bayana Bayana.
