Sept 28 (CNN/GNA) – Hezbollah has confirmed theĀ death of its leader Hassan Nasrallah, after Israel said he was killed in its airstrikes on the Lebanese capital of Beirut on Friday.Ā
The killing marks a major escalation in theĀ long-running conflictĀ and deepensĀ fears of a wider regional war.
Nasrallah was one of theĀ founders of Hezbollah, which formed four decades ago with the aid of Iran, and oversaw its transformation into one of theĀ most powerful paramilitary forcesĀ in the Middle East.
The strikes that killed Nasrallah targeted a densely populated area,Ā killing at least six peopleĀ and wounding dozens more, according to Lebanonās health ministry.
IsraelĀ launched more strikes on southern BeirutĀ overnight, targeting what it says are stores of Hezbollah weapons.
Lebanese state-run media reported further casualties.
