Volta Region expands agricultural production with farmer service centres

By Caleb Kuleke, GNA

Ho, Aug. 21, GNA – Two ultra-modern farmer service centres are currently under construction in the Adaklu and Keta Districts of the Volta Region to expand the regions agricultural production.

These hubs will serve as localised support networks, providing farmers with critical technical backstopping, modern equipment, and training in agronomic best practices to enhance higher crop yields.

Mr. James Gunu, the Volta Regional Minister, who announced this during the Regional Coordinating Council’s meeting in Ho, said additional centres would soon be rolled out to provide farmers with vital support.

The Minister emphasised that the long-term goal was to embed scientific farming techniques at the grassroots level to ensure sustainable, high-yield outputs.

Mr Gunu also announced the successful distribution of 1,000 bags of fertilizer to every district and municipality within the region for the current farming season to boost agricultural production.

The intervention, the Minister said, aimed to empower local smallholder farmers and stimulate higher crop yields in the region for food security.

Under the National Nkoko Nkitinkiti initiative, Mr Gunu said the region had taken delivery of 180,000 live birds, and that had been distributed across the various districts and municipalities.

He stated that this programme was designed to revitalise local poultry value chains, meet the growing domestic demand for meat and eggs, and serve as a strategic tool for rural poverty alleviation.

The Minister reaffirmed the Government’s commitment to protecting farmers’ investments, highlighting the release of GHS 300 million to the National Buffer Stock Company.

This funding will enable the company to purchase surplus produce directly from farmers, effectively stabilising market prices and preventing post-harvest losses.

Mr. Gunu urged a unified effort to accelerate the development of the region, leverage its vast agricultural potential to drive macro-economic growth, and create sustainable jobs for the youth.

Mrs. Marian Jemima Adzroe, Acting Volta Regional Director of Education, said the Directorate was rolling out targeted interventions to eliminate learning gaps in low-performing schools and elevate overall academic outcomes.

She noted that the Directorate was actively strengthening instructional delivery across the region, with a sharp focus on core subjects: English Language, Mathematics, Science, and Social Studies.

Addressing gender-inclusive support, Mrs Adzroe emphasized a balanced approach to student development.

The initiative, she said aimed to sustain the strong academic performance of girls while simultaneously boosting the engagement and achievement levels of boys.
