Kumasi, Aug. 21, GNA – The Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), Kumasi, has secured a grant of US$45,864 under the Africa AI Upscale Programme to strengthen artificial intelligence (AI) education, research and innovation.
KNUST is among selected higher educational institutions in Ghana, Nigeria, Kenya and South Africa participating in the continental initiative, which seeks to build a sustainable and scalable ecosystem for advanced AI education across Africa.
The programme is being implemented by the FATE Foundation in partnership with the African Institute for Mathematical Sciences (AIMS), with support from Google.org.
Under the initiative, participating universities will gain access to the Google DeepMind AI Research Foundations Curriculum, as well as technical, academic and institutional support to enhance AI teaching and applied research.
KNUST will utilise the US$45,864 subgrant to support the implementation of the programme and strengthen its institutional capacity for AI education and research.
Professor Eric Appau Asante, Project Lead and Primary Programme Contact Person for KNUST, will coordinate the University’s participation in the programme.
He will work closely with the University management, participating academic units, multidisciplinary AI champions, teaching assistants and programme partners to implement the project and ensure its long-term sustainability.
The initiative is expected to enhance KNUST’s capacity to train students and researchers in emerging AI technologies while creating opportunities for multidisciplinary teaching, research and innovation.
Management of the University said the programme aligned with KNUST’s strategic focus on innovation, digital transformation and globally relevant education.
According to the University, the necessary facilities, academic support and an enabling institutional environment would be provided for the successful implementation of the programme.
KNUST also indicated that it would explore ways of integrating lessons and outcomes from the initiative into its broader academic and innovation ecosystem.
