Tema, Aug. 10, GNA — The Ghana Water Ltd (GWL) has completed the replacement of weak sections of the 21-inch and 42-inch Kpong-Tema transmission pipelines, allowing water production to resume at the Kpong Treatment Plant.
The maintenance exercise, which commenced on Thursday, August 6, 2026, was completed as scheduled despite technical and operational challenges encountered during the exercise.
GWL, however, said the restoration of water supply would be gradual as the transmission lines and reservoirs were filled and operating pressures rebuilt.
It said, barring unforeseen technical challenges, more consumers would receive water as the system stabilised.
The company said its water demand management and rationing programme remained in effect to ensure equitable distribution of available water and urged customers to continue observing their usual rationing schedules.
Consumers were urged to remain patient as the network progressively recharged, reservoirs replenished, and water pressures were restored.
The statement indicated that Mr Adam Mutawakilu, the Managing Director of GWL, who personally inspected the works at various stages, commended the engineers, contractors, maintenance team and technical personnel for their dedication and resilience in completing the assignment on schedule.
It added that he particularly acknowledged the leadership of the Lead and Chief Manager, ATMA Production, Dr Hadisu Kappus Alhassan, and the Manager in charge of Operations, Mr Michael Botse Baidoo, together with their respective teams.
Mr Mutawakilu said the successful completion of the works demonstrated the value of teamwork, technical expertise, strong coordination and committed leadership in addressing critical infrastructure challenges.
He also expressed appreciation to Mr Kwame Kpekpena, the Managing Director of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), and technical team for their support during the exercise.
He commended the ECG team for working with GWL personnel, even at night, to address critical electrical and operational requirements that facilitated the timely resumption of water production at Kpong.
He further thanked the Ministry of Water Resources, Works and Housing, the Public Utilities and Regulatory Commission (PURC), contractors, engineers, field personnel, support teams and other stakeholders for their contribution to the successful completion of the intervention.
GWL assured consumers in the Greater Accra and Eastern regions that they were closely monitoring the transmission line as they progressively restored supply.
