Gomashie commissions classroom block, to donate desks to Ketu South schools

By Michael Pepsin Avorgah

Avoeme (V/R), Oct. 08, GNA – Madam Abla Dzifa Gomashie, the Member of Parliament (MP) for Ketu South, has commissioned and handed over a fully furnished six-unit classroom block to the Avoeme Basic School.

The facility, equipped with desks and other furniture, is expected to help address overcrowding and provide a more conducive environment for pupils and teachers.

Madam Gomashie also announced plans to distribute about 3,000 additional desks to about 16 basic schools across the Municipality, with Avoeme Basic School having already received its allocation.

She said the additional furniture was separate from the desks provided with the newly commissioned classroom block.

Madam Gomashie said she had saved portions of her allocation as an MP for several months to finance the classroom project, adding that investment in education should go beyond the provision of learning materials to include infrastructure and support for teachers.

She said she had also organised capacity-building training for mathematics teachers in the municipality, in collaboration with a non-government organisation from Accra, to equip them with new approaches to teaching the subject.

Madam Gomashie said her interventions in Ketu South extended beyond classroom infrastructure to skills training, health and other human-capital development initiatives.

She said she had renovated the Klikor Library, provided streetlights to communities and invested in health and education across the three traditional areas of the Municipality.

She also mentioned scholarships and support for some students to pursue studies outside the country as part of her interventions.

Madam Gomashie said the interventions were aimed at building the capacity of residents to become self-reliant and improve their ability to generate income and provide for their families.

She urged parents, teachers and communities to work together to improve educational outcomes in Ketu South and the Volta Region.

Mr Seth Akli, the Head of Planning at the Ketu South Municipal Education Directorate, expressed appreciation to the MP for her investment in education.

He said her support had contributed to the construction of a six-unit classroom block at Akaglakope, a school block for Zuime Basic School, an ongoing kindergarten block at Hatsukope and a three-unit classroom block with ancillary facilities at Glidzi.

Mr William Katamani, Headmaster of Avoeme Basic School, said the school had faced infrastructure challenges, with overcrowded classrooms making teaching and learning difficult.

He said the school’s appeal for additional infrastructure had been received by the MP, resulting in the construction and furnishing of the new block.

Mr Katamani expressed gratitude to the MP and pledged to ensure that the facility and furniture were properly maintained.

He said the provision of the desks would also reduce the financial burden on parents who previously had to provide furniture for their children.

He appealed for the construction of a washroom facility for the school.

Madam Gomashie called for greater collaboration among parents, teachers, community members and other stakeholders to improve education in the Municipality.
