Kpassa (O/R), Aug. 03, GNA – Mr Isaiah Kudjoe Dordoe, the District Chief Executive (DCE) for Nkwanta North, has joined the Oti Regional Directorate of the National Youth Authority (NYA), youth volunteers and residents in a community clean-up exercise at the Kpassa New Market to promote environmental sanitation and civic responsibility.
The exercise, held on Saturday, formed part of activities marking the 2026 National Youth Month Celebration and the observance of National Sanitation Day (NSD).
The clean-up exercise brought together scores of young people, market women, assembly members, opinion leaders and residents, who worked collectively to desilt drains, sweep the market, clear refuse and remove weeds from the surroundings to improve sanitation and public health.
The exercise sought to encourage community participation in maintaining a clean environment while highlighting the important role of young people in shared responsibility and appealed to students, apprentices, traders and all residents to actively participate in future communal labour exercises. national development and environmental stewardship.
Addressing participants after the exercise, Mr Dordoe commended the National Youth Authority for successfully combining the National Youth Month Celebration with National Sanitation Day, describing the initiative as timely and beneficial to the district.
The DCE said environmental cleanliness played a critical role in preventing diseases, improving public health and creating a safe and attractive environment for economic activities.
He disclosed that the Nkwanta North District Assembly was finalising measures to strengthen the enforcement of sanitation regulations through the introduction of district sanitation by-laws.
According to him, the Assembly would strictly enforce the by-laws to ensure greater compliance and sanction individuals who refuse to participate in communal clean-up exercises or engage in practices that undermine environmental sanitation.
Mr Dordoe assured residents of the Assembly’s commitment to improving waste management and creating healthier communities through sustained sanitation campaigns and public education.
He urged residents to complement the Assembly’s efforts by properly disposing of waste, keeping their surroundings clean and supporting initiatives aimed at protecting the environment.
Mr Joshua Kunjin, the Oti Regional Director of the National Youth Authority, expressed satisfaction with the level of participation despite the limited publicity ahead of the event.
He commended the youth and residents for demonstrating commitment to community service and environmental cleanliness, describing their enthusiasm as a positive sign of growing awareness of sanitation issues.
Mr Kunjin stressed that poor sanitation remained a major public health challenge and called on residents to make cleanliness a daily habit rather than limiting it to organised clean-up campaigns.
He encouraged communities to continue supporting sanitation initiatives and announced that subsequent clean-up exercises under the National Youth Month celebration would be expanded to attract even greater participation across the region.
“The turnout today has been very encouraging, considering the short notice. This demonstrates that our young people are willing to volunteer for community development when given the opportunity. We expect the next exercise to be bigger and more impactful,” he said.
Participants expressed appreciation to the National Youth Authority and the District Assembly for organising the exercise and pledged their continued support for future sanitation activities to make Kpassa cleaner and healthier for all.
