Accra, Aug. 3, GNA – United States President Donald J. Trump has reaffirmed Washington’s recognition of Morocco’s sovereignty over Western Sahara and reiterated support for Morocco’s autonomy initiative as the only basis for resolving the decades-long regional dispute.
According to a statement issued by Morocco’s Royal Office, President Trump conveyed the position in a message addressed to King Mohammed VI on the occasion of the 27th anniversary of Throne Day.
“The United States is unequivocal: We recognize Moroccan sovereignty over Western Sahara and support Morocco’s serious, credible, and realistic autonomy proposal as the only basis for a just and lasting solution,” President Trump said.
He stated that alternative approaches would only prolong the status quo and stressed the need for an immediate resolution of the dispute.
“This dispute must end now, and the United States will continue to push toward that goal,” he added.
President Trump also congratulated King Mohammed VI and the people of Morocco on the national celebration, highlighting the long-standing ties between the two countries.
“This year, we celebrate 250 years of American history and enduring friendship with Morocco, a bond forged in trust and mutual respect,” the message said.
The US leader commended King Mohammed VI’s leadership, describing it as an “anchor of stability,” and praised Morocco’s contributions to regional peace, counter-extremism efforts and security initiatives.
He further acknowledged Morocco’s role in the Abraham Accords and underscored the importance of continued cooperation between Washington and Rabat in addressing security challenges in the Sahel region, where political instability and extremist violence remain concerns.
On bilateral relations, President Trump emphasized expanding economic cooperation and investment opportunities between the two nations.
He said Morocco’s economic vision was creating new prospects for growth and prosperity and announced that his administration would encourage economic and social development initiatives in partnership with Morocco, including in Western Sahara.
The US president identified energy, artificial intelligence, critical minerals and defence as priority areas for future cooperation, noting that American technology and innovation would continue to support Morocco’s development in strategic sectors.
“Together, we are ushering in a new era, one that prioritizes the interests of our two peoples,” the message concluded.
