Dambai (O/R), July 7, GNA – The Krachi East Municipal Assembly has begun installing streetlights at strategic locations across the municipality to enhance public security, improve road safety and promote night-time economic activities.
The project, being implemented under the Assembly’s infrastructure and local development programme, is expected to improve visibility along major roads, market centres, public institutions and other busy areas, creating a safer environment for residents, motorists and visitors.
Mr Safo Nketia, the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), said the initiative formed part of the Assembly’s commitment to improving security and the quality of life through the provision of essential public infrastructure.
He said adequate street lighting would help reduce crime, improve traffic safety at night and encourage businesses to operate longer hours, thereby contributing to the municipality’s socio-economic development.
“The Assembly is committed to creating a safe and business-friendly environment where residents can go about their daily activities without fear. The installation of these streetlights is one of the practical measures we are implementing to improve security and support economic growth,” he said.

Mr Nketia said the first phase of the project would cover major roads, market centres, lorry parks, selected communities and other strategic public places identified through consultations with residents, traditional authorities and the security agencies.
He added that the project would be extended to more communities in phases, subject to the availability of resources, to ensure wider access to improved public lighting.
The MCE appealed to residents to protect the streetlights from theft and vandalism and promptly report any damage or suspicious activities to the Assembly or the security agencies.
He stressed that safeguarding public infrastructure was a shared responsibility and essential to ensuring the long-term benefits of the investment.
Residents and traders have welcomed the initiative, expressing optimism that improved lighting would enhance security, reduce fear of crime and enable businesses to operate beyond daylight hours.
Commercial drivers also said the project would improve visibility on major roads at night and contribute to safer transportation within the municipality.
Security officials commended the Assembly for the intervention, noting that improved street lighting would strengthen crime prevention, surveillance and emergency response operations.
The streetlight project forms part of the Krachi East Municipal Assembly’s broader development agenda to improve urban infrastructure, enhance public safety and create an enabling environment for investment and sustainable local economic growth.
