Wontumi’s Lead Counsel seeks withdrawal from Samreboi Illegal Mining Case

Accra, June 12, GNA – Mr Andy Appiah-Kubi, counsel for Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Wontumi, has filed a motion seeking leave of the court to withdraw his legal representation in the Samreboi illegal mining case.

The motion is expected to be moved before an Accra High Court on June 15, 2026.

The application comes at a critical stage of the trial, with the court having scheduled July 3, 2026, to deliver judgment in the case involving Boasiako and his company, Akonta Mining Company Limited.

They are accused of engaging in illegal mining and matters relating to a deed of assignment.

Boasiako currently has three cases pending before different High Courts.

Court records indicate that Mr Appiah-Kubi has represented Boasiako in the matter since October 28, 2025, and was expected to file his written address in the case.

In his motion, counsel recalled challenges encountered during the trial, particularly an application seeking orders for the prosecution to produce copies of an alleged deed of assignment between Boasiako, Akonta Mining Company Limited and two prosecution witnesses, as well as evidence of ministerial authorisation connected to the charges.

He stated that the court dismissed the application, although, according to him, the prosecution neither filed an affidavit in opposition nor produced the requested documents.

Mr Appiah-Kubi said he was disappointed by some of the court’s decisions and did not want those feelings to affect his performance and, ultimately, the interests of his clients.

“I know how illogical it is to expect to win arguments at all times, but my disappointment affects my emotional and psychological balance necessary for maintaining the performance required for the task ahead,” he stated.

He said he believed his clients’ interests would be better served if he stepped aside to allow other legal practitioners to take over the case “from where he left off.”
