Black Stars coach Queiroz confident of improvement after Wales draw

Accra, June 3, GNA – Ghana coach Carlos Queiroz said his side would become more “consistent and efficient” despite being held to a 1-1 draw by Wales in an international friendly.

Substitute Caleb Yirenkyi gave Ghana the lead in the 66th minute but Lewis Koumas struck parity for Wales after heading home from close range deep into added time.

Queiroz, taking charge of his first match, said he was encouraged by how quickly the players adapted to his tactical approach.

“What pleased me most was the way the players responded to my instructions and the game plan,” he said. “They followed and trusted the plan, and that is a good starting point.”

He highlighted defensive organisation, particularly the centre-backs, and said limited preparation time had not prevented the team from showing early progress.

“We have only had a few training sessions, but they were decisive. With more time in camp, we will make a lot of progress and be much more consistent and efficient,” he added.

The Portuguese coach also underlined the need to improve decision-making and attacking efficiency, saying the team would benefit from more training and stronger cohesion.

Looking ahead to Ghana’s preparations for their World Cup opener against Panama, Queiroz said the focus would be on maximising work on the training ground once the squad assembles in North America.

“As soon as we arrive in the United States, we want to do as much work as possible before the game,” he said.

Ghana are scheduled to open their 2026 World Cup campaign against Panama on June 17 in Toronto, Canada.

The Black Stars are expected to play another friendly match before that fixture as they continue their build-up to the tournament.
