Tamale, Aug 31, GNA – The Northern Regional Police Command has announced the arrest of two suspects in connection with the murder of the Chief of Yidani, Naa Ntimla Nwenisim, and his son, Ntimla Bilaga, at Yidani in the Gushegu Municipality of the region.
This was contained in a statement issued to the press in Tamale on Sunday by the Northern Regional Police Command, signed by Deputy Commissioner of Police Mr Wisdom Lavoe, the Northern Regional Police Commander.
The statement said, “On August 14, 2026, at about 0300 hours, the Police received information that three unidentified armed men had attacked the residence of the Chief and shot him and his son.”
It said Police personnel immediately proceeded to Yidani, secured the scene and commenced investigations.
It said preliminary investigations indicated that the assailants entered the compound and demanded to be directed to the chief’s room.
It added that “When their demand was refused, they fired a shot into the roof of a nearby room before proceeding to the chief’s room where they forcibly gained entry and shot both the chief and his son.”
The statement said “Police recovered five empty BB cartridges from the scene and secured them as exhibits. The bodies were subsequently conveyed to the Tamale Teaching Hospital for preservation and post-mortem examination.”
It said on August 17, 2026, a post-mortem examination was conducted by a Pathologist at the Tamale Teaching Hospital and that the verbal cause of death indicated that both deceased persons suffered multiple injuries consistent with shotgun assault and died from severe injuries and haemorrhagic shock.
The statement said, following the incident, the Inspector General of Police deployed a special operations team from the National Police Headquarters and together with support from other security agencies, patrols and security operations had been intensified within Yidani and its neighbouring communities.
It added that the Northern Regional Security Council, led by the Regional Minister, also visited the community to engage the bereaved family and residents and to reassure them of the commitment of the security agencies to ensuring justice.
The statement said the Police Command subsequently received credible intelligence on August 26, 2026, that two persons suspected to be involved in the murders were travelling from Dombine in the Gushegu Municipality towards Chereponi.
It said “Acting on the intelligence, the Gushegu Police promptly alerted the Chereponi District Police Command, which intercepted and arrested the two suspects. They are Majejiba Magne, aged 25 years, and Haruna Nlegle, aged 34 years.
It said on August 27, 2026, a team of Police personnel from Gushegu proceeded to Chereponi and brought the two suspects to the Yendi Divisional Command, where they had since been remanded into Police custody to assist investigations.
The statement assured members of the public that investigations into the murders were ongoing adding that “All available leads are being pursued to establish the full circumstances surrounding the incident and to identify and arrest any other person(s), who may have participated in the murders.”
It appealed to members of the public, especially residents of Yidani, Dombine, Gushegu, Chereponi and their surrounding communities, to provide the Police with any credible information that might assist in the investigation adding “Information provided to the Police will be treated with the requisite confidentiality.”
The statement also appealed to the bereaved family, the youth and residents of the affected communities to remain calm and refrain from acts of reprisal or vigilantism. “Any person found culpable will be dealt with, in accordance with the law and brought before the appropriate court.”
It gave an assurance that the Regional Police Command remained committed to protecting lives and property and ensuring that all persons responsible for the crime were brought to justice.
