Assin North DCE raises alarm over high disaster incidents within a year

Assin Bereku (C/R), June 18, GNA- Mr Sylvester Amakye, the District Chief Executive (DCE) of Assin North, has expressed deep concern over the ‘alarming rate’ of disasters recorded in the district, after an official figure revealed some 76 disasters in a single year.

The revelation, he said, had sent shockwaves through the district, drawing fresh attention to the growing vulnerability of communities in the area to both natural and human-induced disasters.

The incident included 33 domestic fire outbreaks, 20 bushfires, 15 rainstorms, six collapsed buildings and two galamsey pits incidents.

At the first ordinary meeting of the Assembly, he revealed that the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), provided relief support to 82 victims.

Mr Amakye said to minimise human-induced disasters, the NADMO and the Assembly had intensified public education and initiated clean-up exercises to prevent future occurrences.

In view of that, he said 40 volunteers were equipped to support public education, and issue early warning, dissemination and emergency response activities in their communities.

The initiative, he observed was expected to improve emergency response and reduce community dependence on external assistance during disasters.

He advised the Assembly members to support the volunteer groups to help build resilient communities capable of responding effectively to emergencies.
