Blemazado-Anloga, (V/R), June 02, GNA-A major road infrastructure project expected to transform transportation and stimulate economic growth within the Anloga District is set to commence.

The expected commencement follows a successful stakeholder engagement held at Balmaseda days ago ahead of the construction of the Bekpo–Tregui–Agortoe Junction Road, popularly known as the Shime Road.

The engagement brought together traditional authorities, government officials, engineers, assembly members, political leaders, youth groups, and residents from the beneficiary communities to discuss the scope, expectations, and benefits of the project before construction officially began.

The road project, which is expected to be completed within two years, forms part of government efforts to improve road connectivity and accelerate socio-economic development across the Anlo enclave.

The road has, for years, remained one of the most challenging routes within the district, posing significant difficulties for commuters, commercial drivers, traders, farmers, and residents.

Addressing participants during the engagement, officials from the Department of Regional Feeder Roads assured community members of the government’s commitment to delivering a quality road network that would improve accessibility and create new economic opportunities for residents.

The engagement was attended by Mr. Gregory Amissah, the Volta Regional Feeder Roads Engineer, and his deputy, Ing. Tony Nyarko, and hosted by the District Chief Executive for Anola, Madam Sandra Seyram Kpedor, alongside traditional leaders, constituency and branch executives of the NDC Party, assembly members, and residents from the affected communities.

The forum provided an opportunity for project details to be presented to stakeholders while allowing community members to seek clarification on implementation timelines and expected outcomes.

Mr Rchard Kwame Sefe, the Member of Parliament for the Anloga Constituency, in an exclusive interview with the Ghana News Agency (GNA) reaffirmed the government’s commitment to improving road infrastructure in the constituency, noting that the commencement of works marks the fulfilment of a key development promise to the people.

He said:  “This project is a major milestone in efforts to improve transportation and facilitate development within the district. Our people have endured the deplorable condition of Shime roads for many years, and this project, if completed, will remove these burdens.”

Beyond improving mobility, the road project is expected to deliver substantial economic benefits to communities along the Bekpo–Tregui–Agortoe Junction corridor and the wider Anlo area.

The improved road network is expected to significantly reduce travel times and transportation costs for traders, commercial transport operators, and farmers who rely on the route to reach major markets such as Anloga, Anyanui and Dabala, while also improving access to educational institutions, healthcare facilities, and other essential social services.

With contractors and construction equipment already mobilised to the project site, construction is expected to commence immediately, heightening anticipation among residents who view the project as a critical step toward unlocking new opportunities for growth and development across the district.

The Shime communities are predominantly located in a low-lying, marshy ecological zone with fertile wetlands that support straw bed weaving, crop farming, and sugarcane cultivation, which in turn supports traditional alcohol and spirit distillation. Fishing also remains a key economic activity, on the Keta Lagoon and surrounding freshwater bodies, but the poor condition of the roads prevents these products from reaching nearby markets
