Accra, May 8, GNA – The Upper East Regional Police Command has arrested four suspected armed robbers, one of whom later died during a weapons retrieval operation.

A press release copied to the Ghana News Agency on Thursday said the suspects were arrested on May 5, 2026, following an intelligence-led operation in Bolgatanga in the Upper East Region.

The suspects were identified as Abdulai Ibrahim, Amadu Rahman, Amadu Sulemana, also known as Saaga, and Adu Yakubu.

According to Police investigations, the suspects converged at Gbane, a mining community in the Talensi District, after travelling from Yagaba and Fumbisi to allegedly carry out a robbery operation.

During the operation, they reportedly robbed four motorbikes and several mobile phones.

The release said the suspects, during interrogation, admitted to a series of robberies within the Talensi District, along the Yagaba-Fumbisi road and the Yagaba-Nanguruma road in the North East Region.

The gang also allegedly confessed to a robbery attack at the Vikandi Phone Shop in Bolgatanga on March 22, 2025, which was captured in a viral video showing armed men wielding an AK-47 assault rifle.

Police said the suspects further admitted to multiple robbery attacks at mining sites in Gbane, where gold and large sums of money were stolen from the victims.

The suspects later led police to a farm near Biung, close to Gbane, where the alleged gang leader, Amadu Rahman, had hidden an AK-47 rifle.

A search of the area led to the retrieval of the rifle, bearing serial number 68100563, and 87 rounds of live ammunition concealed in a fertiliser sack.

During the operation to retrieve the weapon, Amadu Rahman reportedly collapsed and was rushed to the Bolgatanga Regional Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

Police said his body had been deposited at the hospital morgue for preservation and autopsy.

The remaining three suspects are in Police custody and are expected to be put before court.
