Moscow/Kiev, July 12, (dpa/GNA) – At least seven people have been killed in a Ukrainian attack on the Russian-occupied city of Enerhodar, home to Europe’s largest nuclear power plant, Russian officials said on Sunday.
Four more residents were injured in the attack on the city in south-eastern Ukraine, Alexey Likhachev, head of Russia’s state nuclear corporation Rosatom, and Yevgeny Balitsky, the Russian-installed governor of the Zaporizhzhya region, said.
It was not possible to independently verify the claims. Likhachev accused European politicians and organizations of “simply ignoring” the attacks on Enerhodar, saying at least 11 people have been killed in Ukrainian attacks on the city since late April. Enerhodar, which had a pre-war population of around 53,000, is situated near the Russian-controlled Zaporizhzhya nuclear power plant, which is the largest employer in the city.
The plant, Europe’s largest nuclear power station with six reactors and a rated capacity of 6,000 megawatts, has been under Russian control since March 2022. It is not currently generating any electricity. Several Ukrainian attempts to retake the plant have failed.
A team from the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), is permanently on site to monitor the situation, and prevent a nuclear accident.
