Turkish rock musician detained in probe into aid organization

Istanbul, July 12, (dpa/GNA) – The popular Turkish rock musician, Haluk Levent, has been detained amid a probe into his aid organization Ahbap, state news agency Anadolu reported on Sunday.

Levent is accused of membership in a criminal organization, as well as violating the law against money laundering, it said.

He was detained in the north-western city of Bursa, and taken for questioning, according to the report. Levent considers himself a representative of Anatolian rock, a blend of Turkish folk music and Western rock music.

He is known across Turkey not only for his music, but also for his humanitarian work. Following the devastating earthquakes that struck south-eastern Turkey and Syria in 2023, his organization Ahbap, which translates as friend, was one of the first to provide aid to people on the ground.

The singer, who hails from Adana in south-eastern Turkey, regularly performs free concerts in the earthquake-stricken region.
