Sege, May 20, GNA – Mr George Ofoe Baduor, Chairperson of the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) at Sege, has appealed to passengers using the Accra–Ada Road corridor to report reckless driving, misconduct, and unauthorised fare charges to transport unions for prompt action.
According to him, reporting such incidents would help improve discipline among drivers and reduce avoidable crashes and conflicts between drivers and passengers.
He made the appeal in an interview with the Ghana News Agency (GNA), explaining that transport unions were working to ensure sanity, professionalism, and safety on the roads through continuous education and monitoring of drivers.
Mr Baduor, who also serves as the Kake Pemi Kpe, a drivers’ association leader for drivers within the Greater Accra Dangme communities, noted that although many drivers had been sensitised to prioritise passenger safety and respect, some still misconduct themselves.
According to him, some drivers and conductors (mates) verbally abuse passengers, including elderly persons, a practice he described as unacceptable and against the ethics of the transport profession.
“We have educated our drivers to respect passengers because they are the reason we are in business. Some passengers are even older than the drivers and mates, so they must be treated with dignity,” he stated.
He urged passengers not to remain silent when they encounter reckless driving, dangerous overtaking, drunk driving, overloading, or unapproved fare charges.
Mr Baduor, however, explained that some commercial drivers operating on the roads do not belong to recognised transport unions, making it difficult to regulate their activities and behaviour.
He said this challenge informed efforts by transport unions to strengthen organisation among drivers and encourage adherence to professional standards.
He further appealed to drivers to exercise patience and caution on the roads, especially during peak travel periods, to help reduce road crashes and protect lives.
