Kenya Backs Moroccan Autonomy Plan for Sahara

Accra, April 10, GNA — Kenya has expressed its support for the autonomy plan proposed by Morocco as the framework for resolving the Moroccan Sahara issue, affirming its readiness to work with like-minded States to advance its implementation.

The position was announced on Thursday at the first session of the Morocco–Kenya Joint Cooperation Commission, co-chaired in Nairobi by Morocco’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation and Moroccan Expatriates, Mr Nasser Bourita, and Kenya’s Prime Cabinet Secretary and Cabinet Secretary for Foreign and Diaspora Affairs, Dr Musalia Mudavadi.

In a Joint Communiqué issued at the close of the meeting, Kenya welcomed what it described as the growing international consensus and momentum led by His Majesty King Mohammed VI in support of the Moroccan autonomy plan, describing it as the only credible and realistic solution to the long-standing dispute.

Kenya further characterised the autonomy proposal as a sustainable approach to resolving the regional issue and stated its intention to cooperate with countries sharing similar views to promote its implementation.

The communiqué also noted Kenya’s welcome of United Nations Security Council Resolution 2797, which recognises the autonomy plan under Moroccan sovereignty as the basis for a just, lasting and mutually acceptable political solution.

Kenya reiterated its endorsement of the efforts of the United Nations Secretary‑General and his Personal Envoy to facilitate negotiations within the framework of the autonomy initiative.

For its part, Morocco welcomed Kenya’s support for the UN process as the exclusive mechanism for reaching a lasting political settlement on the Sahara issue.

The Kingdom also expressed appreciation for Kenya’s recognition of Morocco’s continued cooperation with the UN Secretary‑General and his Personal Envoy in advancing the political process in line with relevant Security Council resolutions.
