Kadjebi (O/R), March 04, GNA – Some Public Sector workers in Kadjebi in the Kadjebi District of the Oti Region have renewed calls on the government to institute the payment of a clothing allowance across board, to enable them procure Fugu for the observance of National Fugu Day.
The workers proposed the payment of at least GHS200.00 per month as clothing allowance, explaining that such support would ease the financial burden associated with purchasing Fugu, the traditional attire promoted for wear on Wednesdays.
The appeal was made in separate interviews with the Ghana News Agency (GNA) during visits to selected schools and public offices within the Kadjebi township to assess compliance with the National Fugu Day initiative.
Some of the workers, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said although they fully embraced the policy aimed at promoting made-in-Ghana fabrics and boosting the local textile industry, affordability remained a major challenge.
“Fugu is relatively expensive, and without a dedicated clothing allowance, it becomes difficult for many of us to consistently observe the Wednesday directive,” a teacher at one of the basic schools stated.
They noted that while certain categories of public servants previously enjoyed clothing-related allowances, many others did not benefit from such packages, creating disparities in adherence to the initiative.
The workers emphasised that the introduction of a uniform clothing allowance would not only promote equity but also encourage wider participation in the National Fugu Day campaign, which seeks to project Ghanaian culture and stimulate local economic activity.
A Head of Department at one of the offices said regular patronage of Fugu would support local weavers, tailors and traders, thereby contributing to job creation and rural economic development.
The workers, therefore, appealed to the government and relevant stakeholders to consider their request in future budgetary allocations to ensure the sustainability of the initiative.
They reaffirmed their commitment to promoting Ghanaian culture and wearing Fugu on Wednesdays, provided adequate financial support was made available.
