Accra, March 6, GNA – The Christian Council of Ghana (CCG) has condemned the violent incidents that marred the District Schools Athletics Games held at Agona Swedru on February 19, 2026.
The Council described the acts of violence, widely circulated on social media, as disturbing and said they undermined the peaceful purpose of educational and sporting activities while threatening the moral development of the youth.
A statement signed by the Reverend Dr Cyril Fayose, General Secretary of the Council, said reports indicated that a clash between students of Obrachire Senior High Technical School and Swedru School of Business resulted in serious injuries to at least one student, who suffered a broken tooth and facial wounds that required hospitalisation.
The Council commended the Ghana Police Service, particularly the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) under the leadership of Commissioner of Police Lydia Yarkor Donkor, Director-General, for the swift actions taken following the incident.
The actions included a visit to the affected school, the immediate commencement of investigations, the arrest of three suspects, and a directive to the Headmaster of Swedru School of Business to produce the implicated students within 24 hours.
According to the Council, the prompt measures demonstrated a strong commitment to justice, accountability and the protection of lives, and sent a clear signal that acts of indiscipline and lawlessness would not be tolerated.
It also commended the Ghana Education Service for its decision to indefinitely suspend all zonal inter-school sporting activities in the Central Region.
The CCG said the measure was necessary to safeguard students, allow for a thorough review of the situation, and prevent further escalation amid growing concerns about indiscipline during recent inter-school events.
“As a nation, we must not allow moral decadence and violent conduct to take root in our schools. These incidents point to deeper moral challenges that require urgent and collective attention to preserve our tradition of peaceful coexistence and public safety,” the statement said.
The Council said it stood ready to support efforts that promoted discipline, reconciliation and the moral formation of the youth.
It also prayed for the speedy recovery of injured students and wisdom for authorities to effectively handle the matter.
