Ho, Nov. 13, GNA – Hundreds of youths from across the Volta Region gathered at the Ho Sports Stadium on Wednesday for the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) recruitment screening, creating unprecedented crowds.
Applicants started queuing as early as 0400hours Tuesday, November 11, ahead of the main screening date.
Despite the heavy turnout, the exercise was largely peaceful, with the military maintaining strict order throughout the process.
A few applicants reportedly collapsed due to fatigue or underlying medical conditions.
An insider disclosed to Ghana News Agency (GNA) that those affected were promptly taken to the 66 Artillery Regiment Hospital in Ho for treatment and were currently stable.
Some applicants, however, expressed frustration over the organisation of the recruitment process.
“We have been here since 0200 hours, and they still haven’t attended to us. We’re tired,” one applicant lamented while others criticised the exercise as poorly coordinated, citing confusion over scheduled dates.
The screening included documentation verification, body inspection, height measurement, and other relevant assessments, with applicants who could not be processed on Wednesday, asked to return the following day.
The exercise also provided economic opportunities for the local business community such that food vendors, water and drink sellers, and photographers that GNA spoke to, reported increased sales as applicants and their families spent long hours at the venue.
