Anyanui (VR), Nov. 13, GNA – Madam Sandra Seyram Kpedor, District Chief Executive (DCE) of Anloga in the Volta Region has donated life jackets to boat operators and residents in hard-to-reach communities in the district.

The life jackets numbering about 30 were handed over to Assembly members along the Anyanui Torkor, Fuveme, and Ada Foah routes, areas prone to water accidents on the Volta Lake, as part of efforts to promote water safety.

Madam Kpedor, during a short handing over ceremony at Anyanui said the donation was to curb water accidents and safeguard the lives of commuters and boat operators who rely on water transport for their daily activities.

“I recently saw a video on social media with some people from my district travelling in a boat with no single passenger wearing a life jacket. It was very pathetic and dangerous,” she said.

Madam Kpedor emphasised the importance of wearing life jackets at all times while on the water, saying the risks associated with water travel were very dangerous and could lead to unfortunate incident and death.

The DCE also used the opportunity to appeal to boat operators and owners to ensure strict and consistent use of life jackets to prevent any unforeseen circumstances that could endanger people’s lives.

“This donation is solely through my own efforts, and I’m doing everything possible to get more life jackets to other areas in need. The life jackets are expected to make a significant difference in reducing the risk of water accidents in the Anloga District.”

She said the Anloga District Assembly had been working tirelessly to promote safety on the Lake, and the donation was part of the broader efforts to promote safer, smooth, and successful travel within the area and beyond.

She commended the District Environmental Health Officer and Assembly members for the various electoral areas among others for their constant support and ideas that ensured the smooth running of the assembly.

Madam Kpedor urged philanthropists, individuals, and corporate organisations to assist the assembly to solve other pressing challenges in the various communities.

Some beneficiaries the Ghana News Agency interviewed expressed gratitude to the DCE for the donation and pledged to use the items for the rightful purposes to enhance their own safety on the water.

They also appealed to the government to assist the area with fishing boats and nets, constant provision of premix fuel among others to enable all fishers to operate with ease for improved and successful fishing business to boost the local economy of the district.
