Accra, Nov.24, GNA – Mr Kwame Pianim, a renowned economist, has urged graduates of Gold Coast University to seize opportunities in the economic landscape to help transform the country’s economy.
The University of Gold Coast last Saturday conferred degrees on 546 students across master’s and professional programmes during the ceremony, held on the theme: “Ghana’s Economy: At the Crossroads or on the Right Path?”
Speaking at the congregation, Pianim called on the Class of 2025 to apply their skills learnt to drive national development.
“In times of change, there are opportunities and challenges. You can be the consequential group that transforms Ghana’s economy,” he said.
Mr Pianim encouraged graduates to embrace technology, including artificial intelligence, and maintain curiosity to unlock new possibilities.
Bishop Dr Gideon Titi-Ofei, the Chancellor of the University, urged graduates to uphold integrity and purpose as they enter the workforce.
“A nation rises when leaders rise, and economies shift when minds shift,” he said, stressing that Ghana’s future depends on principled leadership.
Vice-Chancellor Prof. Cedric Bell highlighted the university’s growth from its origins as Accra Business School to a comprehensive institution offering flexible postgraduate programmes.
He announced plans to launch a law faculty and expand internationally recognised courses.
“Ghana’s evolving economy requires problem-solvers and job creators,” Prof. Bell said, urging graduates to leverage their education for societal change.
He noted the university’s alumni network of more than 33,000 across Africa.
Valedictorian Millicent Agyei-Okoampa praised faculty and staff for their support and called on her peers to pursue careers with integrity and commitment to nation-building.
“You have not just taught us; you have transformed our lives. You have shaped the way we live today, and just as though we were learning from you, I would like to thank you for your support,” she said.
